A Study on Oral Hygiene and its Impact on the Development of Oral Cancer
Abstract
Cancer prevalence in India is estimated to be around 2.5 million, with over 8,00,000 new cases and 5,50,000 deaths occurring each year due to this disease in the country. It is still the second leading cause of death in this country. The World Health Organization reported oral cancer as having one of the highest mortality ratios amongst all malignancies. There are many factors responsible for oral cancer like tobacco chewing, alcohol consumption, smoking, infection with Human Papillomavirus, dietry habits etc. Approximately 90% of people with mouth cancer are tobacco users. WHO research indicates a 500 percent increase in cancer by 2025, of which 220 will be due to tobacco use. This study was carried out in Allahabad city. Two hospitals were selected purposely for the collection of data. From these hospitals total 412 respondents were randomly selected in which 206 cases and 206 controls. Study reveals that life style was inadequate in case group. Maximum numbers of cases were belonged to 41- 60 years of age. Most of the cases started addiction form their early age of life. Majority of respondents chewed tobacco and there was a positive association between oral cancer and alcohol consumption, smoking, tobacco chewing and consumption of other things. Most of them were irregular in taking oral hygiene. So among cases these factors might be cause of cancer development. Cancer development risk was more among those who had dental carries, not clean their teeth at bed time, and did not clean their tongue
